POSITION TITLE:  Teacher Assistant (May be designated as Computer Lab, Library or others as determined by school district needs)

 

CLASSIFICATION: Non-exempt 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Minimum of 60 college credit hours (staff possessing a Bachelor’s Degree will be paid as Teacher Assistant+)
  • Ability to work with children and to effectively supervise them in all activities within the school setting. 
  • *Ability to communicate and work well with others including students, teachers, and administrators

 

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS REQUIRED FOR COMPUTER OR LIBRARY DESIGNATION:

  • Organizational skills
  • Typing skills with computer literacy
  • Secretarial experience and familiarity with a variety of office equipment
  • Experience with aid appropriate students for building needs preferred

 

REPORTS TO:  Building Administrator 

 

HOURS IN DUTY DAYS EXCLUDING LUNCH:  7.5 hours

(Note:  Actual workdays may vary in accordance with District needs and administrative assignments and may include occasional weekend work.)

 

WORK DAY:  Monday-Friday

CONTRACT DAYS WORKED:  9 months

 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Reinforces instruction.  The Teacher Assistant does daily direct instruction with small groups of identified students to reinforce classroom instruction.
  • Teacher Assistants prepare lesson plans and materials for the instruction. Requests materials needed and organizes and prepares for instruction.
  • Monitors student progress – keeps progress charts.
  • The Teacher Assistant reports directly to the teacher in preparing lessons and monitoring student progress, scheduling, etc.
  • Maintains records for students they are serving.
  • Works in coordination with the classroom teacher and reports student progress to him/her.
  • Communicates with parents about student needs and progress; meets with parents; prepares activities for parents to do at home with students.
  • Participates in student assessment.
  • Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance that complies with District policies and rules.
  • Demonstrate effective and positive interpersonal relationships with staff, students, and the community and the ability to work as a productive and solid member of the school district team.
  • Must be able to collaborate with peers, possess a positive attitude and be flexible with change.

 

Computer Lab Job Duties May Include:

  • Monitor the use of technology equipment and reinforce instruction that covers the Moberly Technology Benchmarks for grades 3-5: 
    • Correct posture and technique of keyboarding.
    • Proper care and use of technology resources and a student’s responsibility for 
    • this care and use. 
    • Functions available on various programs and software. 
    • Understanding the legal and ethical aspects of technology.
    • Use of search engines on the Internet. 
    • Using technology as a tool for life. 
    • To cover the computer lab during other times that teachers and/or students use the computer lab.
    • To keep updated schedule of computer lab availability.
    • To monitor and organize lab printer output. 
  • Administer district assessments using the computer as needed

 

Library Job Duties May Include:

  • Assist in opening the Library Media Center each day.
  • Circulate (includes checking in and out and shelving) and reserve library materials to students and teachers 
  • Process inter-library and intra-library loans
  • Assist students and teachers in accessing and utilizing information, both in print and non-print formats. 
  • Issues hall passes to students 
  • Laminate items for faculty – MHS only.
  • Make copies as needed for the Library Media Center.
  • Assist with displays
  • Assume supervision of students and continue with LMC duties in the absence of the LMC Specialist. 
  • Assist students and teachers in operating audiovisual and computer equipment.
  • Perform minor repairs of print materials
  • Prepare daily, monthly, and annual circulation and usage reports.
  • Foster an atmosphere which encourages student and faculty usage. 
  • Assist in closing the LMC each day. 



OTHER JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Other duties as assigned.  This does not preclude the assignment of additional or supplemental duties.  The District reserves the right to modify the assignment as needed to reflect such duties.  

 

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Duties performed typically in district settings to include the cafeteria, gym, recreational areas and other assigned areas.
  • Physical demands can include but are not limited to:  Exerts up to 40 lbs of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects including equipment such as audio-visual.
  • Frequent walking, standing, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, and other limited physical activities are required.
  • Mental demands can include but are not limited to:  Comparing, copying, computing, compiling, analyzing, coordinating, and synthesizing.
  • Frequent movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required.
